Optical networks are the information highway of the Internet, carrying the world’s communication and data traffic. Vencore Labs’ researchers have been at the forefront of a diverse portfolio of optical advancements focusing on the next leap forward, creating mechanisms to enable resilient, agile, reconfigurable networks that can provide bandwidth-on-demand for applications ranging from IP VPN services to high-bandwidth optical circuits for big data transfer and other cloud computing applications.  

Quantum technologies hold significant promise for providing unbreakable security in fiber optic communication systems and are being pursued in research laboratories worldwide.  Vencore Labs pioneered the transmission of quantum signals through fiber carrying other telecommunications traffic, and has recently demonstrated new techniques for extending the distances over which quantum systems can operate.  Our research also includes the field of quantum computing, which holds the promise of increasing computing speeds exponentially, thus enabling the solution of classes of problems that cannot be addressed with today’s computers. Our researchers’ ground-breaking advances in quantum information science were recently under-scored by the team’s receipt of a Thomas Edison Patent award.

At Vencore Labs, our researchers are exploring applications of non-linear optics to electronic warfare and to LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging).  An example of work in these areas includes demonstration of a novel optical technology that can be flexibly “programmed” for signal processing. We have also developed novel detection techniques for LIDAR systems, potentially enabling at least an order of magnitude increase in LIDAR data acquisition rates.
