Thomas Chapuran

Research Director, Broadband Networking

Dr. Thomas Chapuran is a research director at Vencore Labs, where he manages the broadband networking research department. He is responsible for research initiatives in optical networking, optical signal processing and RF photonics, and quantum communications and computing.

Prior to his role at Vencore Labs, Chapuran was Telcordia’s technical lead, in a series of programs on quantum communications, which pioneered the use of Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) in reconfigurable, multi-wavelength optical networks, and which demonstrated the ability to carry quantum signals over the same fibers with strong classical traffic. He also played a leadership role in the IARPA Quantum Computer Science (QCS) program, with responsibilities including development of resource estimates for large scale quantum computing.

Chapuran has a wide range of experience in technical design, performance, and evolution of communications networks, and has worked with large and small telecom carriers, government and industry partners and internal product development organizations.

Chapuran received a Bachelor of Science degree in physics from Michigan State University, and a Master of Science degree and Ph.D. in physics from the University of Illinois. He is the author of more than 90 journal and conference papers and three patents. Chapuran was a co-recipient of the Thomas Alva Edison Patent Award in 2012 for innovations in quantum communications and was elected an Applied Communication Sciences Fellow in 2012 in recognition of his technical leadership and critical contributions in broadband communications and information networking.
